A massive thank you to North East Scottish Labour MSP, Lewis Macdonald, who raised the following Motion at the Scottish Parliament on behalf of the David Doig Foundation. Lewis has also kindly written to John Swinney, Cabinet Secretary for Education and Skills to establish how the Foundation might support the Scottish Government's Attainment Challenge.
Motion S5M-08641: Lewis Macdonald, North East Scotland, Scottish Labour,
David Doig Foundation
That the Parliament welcomes the newly created David Doig Foundation, which aims to support a broad range of activities that will enable disadvantaged young people to access educational opportunities, build aspirations and transform lives; notes that the foundation was established in memory of David Doig, the chief executive officer of the oil and gas skills and standards setting body, OPITO, who suddenly and tragically passed away earlier in 2017; understands that David was a larger than life character who did so much to help others and left a huge legacy by making a difference over many years to the safety and skills of the global offshore community; further understands that the foundation aims to increase educational opportunities for young people from disadvantaged backgrounds through such things as the provision of bursaries, scholarships, one-to-one coaching sessions and outward bound education courses; agrees with the foundation that no child’s educational success should be limited by their socio-economic or geographical background, and wishes the organisation the very best in its efforts to ensure that more young people have the opportunity to achieve their true potential in life.
